ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician- Grade 1
ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician- Grade 1
This course is for all personnel involved in testing fresh concrete. ASTM C94 and ACI 301 require technicians to have demonstrated an ability equivalent to ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician-Grade I certification.
A half day review, with exams administered the following day, is sponsored by OCAPA in cooperation with the American Concrete Institute (ACI). It is conducted by a Professional Engineer and graded by ACI.
Those successfully completing both the ACI written and performance examinations will receive a wallet card from ACI certifying them as an ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I. Certification is valid for 5 years.
Register for ACI Field Testing Technician Certification Classes:
REQUIRED PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
- Familiarity with basic algebra.
- A working knowledge of the following ASTM Standards:
- C 172 – Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
- C 1064 -Temperature of Freshly Mixed Portland Cement Concrete
- C 143 – Slump of Hydraulic Cement Concrete
- C 138 -Unit Weight, Yield, and Air Content of Concrete
- C 231 – Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by thePressure Method
- C 173 – Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the VolumetricMethod
- C 31 – Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field
- You must be familiar with your testing equipment and be able to proceed through testing procedures without coaching or comment from the examiner or others.
- Students must provide their own equipment or arrange to share equipment.
No more than two students per equipment set.
NOTICE TO STUDENTS RE-CERTIFYING OR CHALLENGING:
- You must provide your previous ACI # on the registration form.
- If you are re-certifying, ACI requires successful completion of both the performance and written examinations.
- Individuals that are re-certifying are not required to attend the review
- ACI exams (written or performance) are not administered outside of scheduled class dates.
NRMCA Pervious
NRMCA Pervious
The goal of this certification class is to ensure that knowledgeable contractors are selected to place the product and thereby minimize the chance for failure.
The program is designed to be administered locally in conjuction with planned training sessions or demonstrations of pervious concrete placement. NRMCA provides certification exams and performance evaluations to approved local sponsoring groups for administering the certification.
The NRMCA Pervious Concrete – Technician Certification class requires knowledge in the following areas of concrete construction:
- General information about applications and use of pervious concrete
- Pervious concrete materials, mixture proportioning and production
- Proper use of tools and equipment
- General design principles of pervious concrete pavements
- Pervious concrete construction
- Maintenance and troubleshooting
- Checklists for planning, design, and construction
This program includes certification of personnel at the following levels:
- Pervious Concrete Technician
- Pervious Concrete Installer
- Pervious Concrete Craftsman
ODOT CCT- Concrete Control Technician
ODOT CCT- Concrete Control Technician
This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of concrete mix design. A Concrete Control Technician (CCT) is responsible for proportioning concrete mixtures to meet job requirements and for making adjustments to the mix design and mix production as necessary to provide a concrete mixture of the quality required by specifications.
The CCT course is sponsored by OCAPA in cooperation with Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
Those successfully completing the course will receive a certificate and wallet card from OCAPA and ODOT certifying them as a Concrete Control Technician. The certification is good for 3 years.

REQUIRED PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
Students must have successfully completed the ACI Concrete Field Technician Grade I and the ODOT Quality Control Technician (QCT) exams before taking the CCT exam.
All students without previous CCT certification must complete and return the Basic Concepts and Pre-Program Math Review (included with study materials).
This course consists of 24 hours of review and instruction followed by a 4 hour open book written exam. This class moves very quickly! Extensive study prior to the course is HIGHLY recommended!
ODOT QCT- Quality Control Technician
ODOT QCT- Quality Control Technician
A Quality Control Technician (QCT) performs testing of fresh Portland cement concrete including sampling, concrete temperature, slump, unit weight, air content, and fabrication of specimens for strength testing and performs other duties including calculating cement content and water-cement ratio as required by specifications. This is a special segment designed by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) as a supplemental to the ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I for certification to work on state projects.
Register for ODOT QCT Certification Classes:
A half day review, with the exam given the next morning, is sponsored by OCAPA in cooperation with ODOT. Individuals will need to be familiar with water-cement ratio worksheets and be able to navigate the following ODOT manuals :
- Manual of Field Testing Procedures
- Oregon Standard Specifications for Construction – 2021 (Black Book).
The 2021 Oregon Specifications must be purchased through an outside vendor. The purchaser must create a login/password account to process the order.

The Manual of Field Testing Procedures is not available through OCAPA, but can be purchased through the ODOT website:

A current copy of ASTM C-94 Specifications (found in the ACI manual) is needed for the exam. The exam is a 90 minute open book exam with a passing grade of 80%. Those successfully completing the ODOT examination and the ACI written and performance exams will be certified for work on ODOT projects. This certification expires the same date as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I.

This class does NOT include the ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification, which is required. Please remember to register for the ACI class.
